12V vs 120V Pool Lights: Which One You Have and Why It Matters
Every inground pool light runs on one of two electrical systems: 120V line voltage straight from the panel, or 12V low voltage stepped down through a transformer. Knowing which one your pool has matters for two reasons. It determines which replacement lights you can order, and it explains that gray box near your equipment pad that you may never have thought about. Here is the difference, how to tell which you have, and what it means for an LED upgrade.
The Two Systems
120V systems feed the light directly from a dedicated, GFCI protected circuit. This was the standard approach for decades, and the classic 300W and 500W incandescent fixtures like the Pentair Amerlite and Hayward AstroLite commonly run this way. It works, but it puts line voltage at the fixture, which is why code requirements around bonding, grounding, and GFCI protection for these circuits are strict.
12V systems put a transformer between the panel and the light. The transformer steps 120V down to 12V AC before it ever reaches the pool, so the voltage present at the fixture is dramatically lower. Many newer pools and most modern nicheless lights, including the 1.5 inch formats used by Pentair MicroBrite and GloBrite, Hayward ColorLogic, and Jandy WaterColors, run on 12V AC. Low voltage systems have become the default in much of new construction for exactly this safety logic.
How to Tell Which One You Have
Three places give you the answer. First, the equipment pad: a transformer box between the breaker and the light circuit means 12V. Second, the light's label or paperwork: the voltage is printed on the fixture sticker and in any manual you still have. Third, the fixture format itself is a strong hint, since small 1.5 inch nicheless lights are typically 12V while classic large incandescent fixtures are frequently 120V. If none of those settle it, a licensed electrician can confirm at the junction box in minutes, and that is money well spent before ordering anything.
The one rule: match the replacement light to the voltage of your system. A 12V light on a 120V circuit will be destroyed instantly, and the reverse simply will not run correctly.
