Pentair Amerlite LED Replacement: The Complete Upgrade Guide

If your pool was built in the last several decades and has a big round light about 10 inches across, there is a strong chance you are looking at a Pentair Amerlite or one of its close relatives. It is one of the most widely installed pool lights in America, and it is also the fixture we hear about most from owners tired of feeding it 300W and 500W incandescent bulbs. This guide covers how to confirm what you have and what the LED conversion involves.

Identifying the Amerlite Format

Three visual checks identify the format from the deck. First, the size: the fixture face is roughly 10 inches across with a stainless trim ring. Second, the screw: a single brass pilot screw sits at the very top of the ring, at the 12 o'clock position. Third, the ring hooks into the niche with a tab at the bottom, which is why the fixture tilts out from the top once that one screw is removed.

Behind the fixture is the niche itself, the stainless housing built into the pool wall. Standard Pentair large niches carry part numbers in the 78210400 series (78210400, 78210500, 78210600, and 78210700, which differ by hub size and position), with a 10 inch inside diameter opening and an 11-1/2 inch flange. The classic 120V 500W Amerlite light itself commonly appears under part numbers like EC602128. If you can read a sticker or stamped number on your fixture or paperwork, those numbers confirm the format instantly.

Why the Incandescent Version Wears You Down

The original design runs a large incandescent flood bulb behind a glass lens, sealed with a gasket. Incandescent bulbs have been known to last only one to three swim seasons of nightly use, and the heat they generate tends to age the lens gasket right along with the filament. Each bulb change means opening the sealed lens, replacing the gasket, and resealing, and a reseal that does not seat perfectly lets water reach the lamp socket. Many owners end up on a permanent rotation of bulbs, gaskets, and crossed fingers.

The LED Conversion Path
