Pentair GloBrite Leaking or Cracked? Why Water Gets In and Why Silicone Will Not Fix It
If you pulled a Pentair GloBrite out of the niche and found water behind the lens, a brown stain spreading across the inside, or a hairline crack along the seam, you already know how this ends. The light is a sealed unit, it cannot be opened, and once water is inside it is done. This guide walks through what a leaking GloBrite looks like, why the housing cracks in the first place, why the RTV silicone trick that circulates on pool forums does not stop it, and how our drop-in GloBrite replacement was built so there is no path for water to get in.

What a Leaking GloBrite Looks Like
The failure is so consistent that most owners can diagnose it from the deck. Here is the sequence, roughly in the order it shows up:
Water or fog behind the lens. The first sign is condensation on the inside of the lens in the evening, then a visible water line, then standing water. If you can see droplets on the inside of the lens, the seal has already failed.
A brown or rust-colored stain. Once pool water reaches the LED board and the steel hardware inside, corrosion starts. The stain grows over weeks, and the light often turns amber or loses its colors before it goes dark, because the board is corroding faster than it is failing outright.
A hairline crack at the seam. Run a fingernail around the joint where the lens is pressed onto the body. On most failed GloBrites you will feel the crack before you see it, usually in the same spot on every light from the same pool. Cracks at the cable entry on the back are the other common location.
Rust bleeding out of the light. On lights that have been leaking for a season, rust streaks show up on the niche and the plaster around it. That is the internal hardware dissolving.

Why GloBrite Housings Crack and Take On Water
None of this is bad luck or a bad batch. It comes from how the GloBrite is built: a 15 watt LED board and driver sealed inside a hollow plastic shell, sitting in the shallowest and warmest water in the pool. Three things work on that shell every single day.
1. Trapped air that expands and contracts
The inside of a GloBrite is air. Every evening when the light comes on, the board heats that air and it expands, pushing outward on the lens seam and the cable entry. Every night when the light goes off, the air cools and contracts, pulling inward. That is a pressure cycle, and it repeats a thousand times over a few seasons. Plastic joints tolerate a few hundred of those cycles. They do not tolerate a few thousand, and the seam is the weakest point.
2. Heat with nowhere to go
An LED turns roughly 40 percent of its power into light. The rest is heat, and in a hollow housing that heat has to cross an insulating air gap and a plastic wall before it reaches the water. The board runs hot, the plastic around it runs hot, and hot plastic ages faster. It gets brittle, it shrinks a little, and the seam that was tight when the light was new is no longer tight after two or three summers.
3. Pool water finishing the job
Once a hairline gap opens, chlorinated or salt water works in by capillary action, and the same pressure cycle that opened the crack now pumps water through it. Inside, the water meets a live circuit board and steel screws and springs. Corrosion begins immediately. The board draws more current as it corrodes, runs hotter, and the crack widens. From first fog on the lens to a dead light is usually one season.

Why RTV Silicone on the Seam Does Not Work
The most common workaround we hear about is running a bead of RTV or marine silicone around the lens seam and the cable entry, either on a new GloBrite before it goes in or on an old one that has started to fog. We have talked to a lot of customers who tried it. It does not stop the failure, and here is why.
The problem is inside the housing, not outside it. Silicone on the outside does nothing about the air trapped inside, so the pressure cycle continues exactly as before. The seam still flexes. The silicone either cracks along with it or peels away at the edge, and water follows the same path it always would have.
Silicone does not bond to the GloBrite plastic underwater long term. The housing is a smooth engineering plastic that silicone adheres to poorly even when dry and clean. Add chlorine, salt, UV, and constant immersion, and the bond breaks down over a season. Once the edge lifts, the bead is a place for water to collect, not a barrier.
You cannot reach the crack that matters. Many GloBrites fail at the cable entry or along a crack that runs under the lens ring, where a bead of silicone cannot get to. Sealing the visible seam leaves the actual leak path open.
If the light is already fogging, it is already wet inside. Silicone seals moisture in as effectively as it keeps it out. The corrosion that started when water first reached the board keeps going.
How We Built a GloBrite Replacement That Does Not Leak
We did not add a better bead of sealant to the same design. We removed the three things that cause the leak.
1. A resin filled housing with no air inside
Our replacement is completely filled with resin. There is no hollow cavity, no trapped air, and therefore no pressure cycle pushing on a seam every night. The electronics are encased in a solid, chemical resistant block rated IP68 for continuous submersion. The failure mode that cracks GloBrites has nothing to work on because there is no seam under load.

2. Liquid heat transfer instead of an air gap
Because the housing is solid, the LED board sheds its heat by conduction straight through the housing into the pool water, with no insulating air layer in the way. The pool is an enormous heat sink that never gets warmer than the pool. The board runs cool, the housing runs cool, and the plastic is never cooked brittle from the inside. This is the same design change that stops the overheating and shutting off problem.
3. No path for water, now or ten years from now
A seal only has to be good on day one if nothing is trying to open it. With no pressure cycle and no heat stress, our perma-seal housing is not fighting against anything. There is no gasket to age, no glued lens ring to fatigue, and no cable entry sitting on a hollow body. The light is one solid piece from the lens to the cable, and it stays that way.
